How much data do you need for 5 days in Thailand?

Based on real usage, not guesswork. Maps, Grab, social media and video calls consume wildly different amounts.

There is no single right number, but there is a right way to work it out. Instead of guessing, add up the activities you actually do on holiday.

Real daily consumption

ActivityPer dayNote
Google Maps navigation50–150 MBAlmost zero if you download offline maps first
Ride-hailing apps20–40 MBMostly base map tiles
Messaging30–80 MBPhotos push this up fast
Facebook, Instagram300–600 MBAutoplaying video is the main cost
TikTok800 MB – 1.5 GBThe heaviest common app by far
30-minute video call300–500 MBA voice call is about 15 MB
Photo backup to cloud1–3 GBTurn this OFF while abroad

Three tiers by usage style

Light — 3 GB for 5 days

Maps, taxis, messages home and quick lookups. No heavy social media, no video. Comfortable if you download offline maps.

Typical — 5–8 GB for 5 days

This suits most people: some Facebook and Instagram, a story a day, a few video calls home. Take 8 GB if you post photos and video often.

Heavy — 15 GB or unlimited

TikTok on the road, live streaming, remote work, or tethering a laptop. At this level unlimited plans usually cost less per gigabyte.

Savings that work immediately

  • Download offline maps before you fly — this removes almost all navigation traffic.
  • Disable video autoplay in Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.
  • Cap YouTube quality at 480p on mobile data.
  • Turn off automatic app updates over mobile data.
  • Hotel Wi-Fi in Thailand is generally good — save heavy tasks for the room.
